Kiara had fallen asleep nestled next to Kovu in the cave at Pride Rock, but she awoke with a rising panic filling her chest. It was too dark. Even if it was the middle of the night, the light from the stars was enough to see by. Her dark eyes widened as she searched blindly for the cave entrance. It was a familiar enough cave that she didn't need to see to leave.
The ground felt different too, under her paws, but that wasn't her primary concern.
She was blinded for a moment when light suddenly returned. Closing her eyes, she shook her head roughly, trying to clear her vision. Her ears flicked in various directions, picking up on minute, unfamiliar sounds.
As the lioness's sight finally cleared, Kiara glanced around. There was a clear pool in front of her. Turning sharply, Kiara was distraught to see that there was no cave, no Pride Rock, no Kovu, no parents...
But who could've done this? Zira might've tried to kidnap her as a cub, but Zira was gone, and she was fully grown. Besides, she liked to think that she would've woken up before being taken from her family. It was the pressing darkness that had drawn her from her slumber.
Kiara sat by the edge of the water, staring into it as if seeking answers. But the still water revealed nothing, and Kiara felt tears forming in her eyes. It was one thing to crave independence from her father, it was another to find herself completely alone in a new place.

The last thing Kovu remembered doing was getting up in the middle of the night to relieve himself. Then everything had gotten black and sketchy and there was a sensation of falling down, down, down until his head hit the floor and he saw stars.
When he woke up Kovu instantly knew he was in unfamiliar territory. Jumping up the dark lion stared about him, eyes wide as he tried to make sense of all this. Surely he was dreaming, he decided as he started to walk about the dense jungle floor.
When he came to an opening he peeked out, seeing a river of sorts but none like he'd ever seen before. It sparkled and glowed under the starry sky and he wondered how it might feel if he jumped in. However as his eyes darted across the waters he saw a figure near the end and instantly recognized it to be Kiara. He smiled to himself and decided he would scare her. Creeping up the edge, Kovu stalked purposefully forward until he was close enough to pounce.
"Yah!" He shouted before laughing as he tackled her to the floor of the smoother ground. "Pinned ya."

Kiara was too distraught to notice the familiar scent on the air. She should've picked up on it, but her thoughts were elsewhere. She did, however, catch a sound, but it didn't quite register. She listened carefully, straining to hear another sound, to figure out what--
Kiara was roughly pushed over. On an automatic response, her claws came out, but she didn't attack as she recognized both scent and lion. "Kovu! You're here!" He had snuck up on her, but she didn't mind. He was the better hunter, after all. She reached her nose towards him, purring lightly. She still didn't know where they were, but with Kovu there she felt more buoyant.

Kovu reached down to meet her, purring as he gave her a soft lick. "Of course I'm here, this is my dream after all." He replied, not yet realizing that this was reality.
He stared down at her with curious green eyes before reaching a paw down and poking her carefully. "Who knew dreams could be this vivid." He let her up some before his gaze swept along the scenery. Was it common to dream about places one has never visited? He had a more outrageous imagination than he'd thought...

The lithe lioness purred again at Kovu's gesture of affection. She was pleased he was here in this place. It made the strangeness more manageable.
A dream? She giggled at his poke, but it was a half-hearted laugh. Kiara sat up, frowning thoughtfully. It didn't feel like a dream to her, and that crushing darkness had felt real. "Kovu... I don't think this is a dream." She leaned her head into his mane briefly before bending to the water for a drink.

Everything felt so real and the way Kiara was acting so made him realize that maybe this wasn't a dream. Then it if wasn't a dream- what the heck was going on? "What? This is insane, then how did we get here?" Kovu tried not to let the panic show in his voice as he stared around again, wondering if there would be others here beside them.
Bending over the water, Kovu looked down and saw his refection, seeing the scar that Zira had given him, the one that so reminded him of Scar and what he might become. He shivered before looking around them again, sniffing the air as he tried to figure out where on earth they could be.

After her drink, Kiara set one paw on top of Kovu's. "I don't know, but as long as we're here together..." She left her thought unfinished, assuming Kovu knew what she was saying.
Kiara caught him watching his reflection and nuzzled close again. "We'll be okay, Kovu," she murmured to him. She could tell he was thinking about Scar again, and she wanted to distract him from that thought process. "Do you want to explore with me?" It would almost be like when they were cubs and in the swamp together. Anne she knew their teamwork would be as flawless now as it was then.
